Women’s Ski Mountaineering Seminar On Mt. Shasta

Jenn Carr: “Why is guiding women’s trips important to you?”

Maddie Crowell: “Identities seem to be formed by our experiences and the stories we tell ourselves. As a female guide one story I tell myself is that women empowerment can be derived from other inspiring women. I have been incredibly lucky to have led several women only trips. From mountaineering trips on Mt. Shasta, to Ski + Yoga Retreats in Japan, to first time backpacking trips on the PCT. Having women’s only groups has offered a different experience that I really enjoy. There’s space to connect, ask questions without ego, and really engage with other female perspectives. I have seen the advantage of being able to grow and progress in an all women mindset. When I watch a woman send a cliff, climb a route, or assess a plan I can relate on a more doable level. While I don’t think women’s only trips are the answer to everything, I think they can inspire in new ways and help build confidence for other co-mingled trips”

We love Maddie for many reasons. She is just an incredibly nice person with a love for the mountains and skiing (and snacks!). A strong work ethic and close attention to detail make her a guide’s guide. Add to that a comprehensive list of experiences and you will understand why she is so capable. Originally from Telluride, CO Maddie grew up playing in the San Juan mountains. As a Salomon athlete ambassador she has competed on the Freeride World Tour. She spends her winters ski guiding in Colorado, has hosted several Women’s Ski and Yoga retreats in Japan, and guides on Shasta and Denali in the spring and summer.

JC: Why do you guide?

MC: “Guiding allows me to work in an environment where I can be my best self. When you have the opportunity to be your best self you have the ability to inspire and connect with others on a very authentic level. I also believe that human connection to nature is vital. Providing an opportunity for people to get outside and inspire them to respect our outdoor environment is the foundation of why I enjoy guiding.”

If your serious about improving your backcountry skills, finding adventure, and challenging yourself on a classic ski mountaineering objective, Mt. Shasta is the perfect place to begin. If you also want to enjoy 4 days with likeminded women consider joining Maddie for this seminar. Our plan is to ski the West Face Gully of Mt. Shasta as well as the immense south face of Shastina, reaching the summits of 2 classic Cascade volcanoes. This is a personal dream trip and one to satisfy those with a desire for big vertical and endless turns.

One of the barriers that many women face getting into the backcountry is the need for professional instruction. This seminar is designed to demystify the basics and introduce more advanced skills. Topics that will be covered include understanding basic snow travel and movement, ice axe and crampon use in alpine environments, rope use for hazard management and glacier travel, navigation and route planning, intro to snow stability assessment, steep snow climbing and skiing, and gear selection.

Is this trip right for you?

No ski mountaineering experience is required. Guests should have advanced downhill ability in all conditions and previous experience with backcountry ski touring and skiing uphill or “skinning”.  A high level of fitness will serve you well and is a must when considering two objectives back-to-back.

And don’t worry, if you’re a dude and want to join Maddie for a trip on Mt. Shasta, she’s also leading our Denali Prep Course and other co-ed ski mountaineering climbs and seminars this spring.
