Chris/Andrew, Thanks for the

Chris/Andrew, Thanks for the great ski summit trip last weekend! It was a blast to explore the mountain on skis and I really appreciated Andrew's "nose for the snow." We found great conditions every day we were up there and it was an amazing experience snapping the boards back on after tagging the summit. I learned a ton and had even more fun...can't ask for a better trip! Thanks Again! Tyler

Are snowshoes or skins

Are snowshoes or skins required? Will boots + crampons get me up the whole way without snowshoes?

For a climb and ski descent

For a climb and ski descent of Shasta we will often use skins or snowshoes  They may not be necessary if there has been no recent snowfall.  Best to call just prior to your trip to check on current conditions.  530-926-3117.

Can you ski down using

Can you ski down using standard alpine skis, or do you need randonee / telemark ski gear?

Shasta can be skied using

Shasta can be skied using any of the gear you mentioned, but many people prefer tele or randonee both for its lightness and the ability to ski "up" using skins.  In softer snow conditions this can be a lot easier than hiking and you don't need to carry extra boots.

What is the required

What is the required experience? Is basic mountaineering a pre-requisite? In terms of equipment, do snowboarders need either a splitboard + skins, or snow shoes? Or can we climb with regular snowboarding boots (or snow boots or water-resistant hiking shoes)? Thanks!

No experience is required

No experience is required for several routes we guide on Shasta.  The Basic Mountaineering class is an excellent introduction to climbing techniques, but is not a prerequisite.  For snowboarders both splitboards and snowshoes work for the approach, but for the steeper sections of the mountain crampons are usually required, so boots will have to be crampon compatible.

Is the April 30 - May 1 trip only 2 days instead of 3?

Scott, oops, thanks for the message.  The correct dates are April 30-May 2.  -Chris

What route are you taking?

What route are you taking? Avalanche Gulch, West Face or East side?

With ideal conditions, we

With ideal conditions, we climb the Avalanche Gulch route and ski/board the West Face.  This makes for a great ascent and descent.  Conditions are looking good this year for corn skiing.  We are about to receive more snow for the next week or so, good to add to the snowpack on the mountain this season.  We hope you can join us!  -Chris

I am interested in the 3 day

I am interested in the 3 day climb and decent. Probably the May 29-31 dates. Do we rent the equipment or is it provided. Also what is the best training to prepare for the time on the mountain?

Hello Mikka,   We

Hello Mikka,

We provide all of the group equipment including tents, main meals, ropes, harnesses, passes and permits.  You are responsible for all your own personal equipment which you can rent locally if necessary.  I have emailed you the list.  There is lots of snow this year on Shasta, it should be a great spring for skiing!  Cheers, -Chris

What gear is provided in the

What gear is provided in the package? I already have a split board, and have been wanting to do Shasta - but wanted to do steep stuff/north face.

Hi Jeff,   We provide

Hi Jeff,

We provide all of the group equipment on our climbs including tents, main meals, passes, permits, ropes, and harnesses.  You are responsible for all your own personal equipment including boots, crampon, ice ax, helmet, clothing, sleeping bag, backpack, and snowboard/skis.  The climbs in May are on the south and west side routes on Shasta.  We could arrange a private climb on the northside once it becomes accessable in June.  Lots of snow this season, it should be great riding conditions this year!  Cheers, -Chris

How's the snow holding up?

How's the snow holding up? Specifically, which of the 4 offered weekends is likely to have the best skiing conditions this season?

Pierre,   It's snowing

Pierre,

It's snowing now!  We have had a good year, but with lots of wind.  I am confidant we will receive more snow before the season is over.  I think early to mid May will be best for skiing and borarding.  I hope you can join us!  -Chris

Hi, How much time of the 3

Hi, How much time of the 3 day seminar is spent on the mountain skiing? Is the ascent and decent completed in the same day or over several days? Is there classroom time too, and if so how much? Cheers, Matt

Hi Matt, The entire three

Hi Matt,

The entire three days is spent on the mountain.  We will ski each day as well teach and practice ski mountaineering skills and techniques.  Day one we hike to basecamp, set up camp and go for an afternoon tour.  Day 2 is a longer tour with skills and turns completed as we assess weather and snow conditions.  The third day begins with an alpine start for our summit climb and ski descent.  We will complete the climb and ski and return to basecamp, pack up and head to the trailhead, a full day!  Cheers,  -Chris

Could you define strong?

Could you define strong? Maybe steepness (in degrees) that would be boarded..... Cheers - Spence

Hi Spence, The terrain

Hi Spence,

The terrain is not especially steep, we will ski and board the West Face or Avalanche Gulch route which is about 35-40 degrees max.  The necessary skill is to be fit and a competant off piste skier/rider.  The snow is not groomed and can be variable.  It can also be perfect corn which is what we are hoping for!
